part of dinner

I picked and meticulously washed lettuce from the garden while julia pulled lettuce off the counter and tried to eat it. I should not have left the cloth so close to the edge.

The Smelliest Flower in All the Land

Have you ever planted paperwhites/narcissus? In the middle of a freezing January, I got the notion to bring a little spring into the home, so I naively bought a paperwhite bulb--the kind that comes with dried out/compressed soil, a pot, and four bulbs. You just add water and watch it grow! Nice, pretty, and easy, right? Well, I planted the suckers, waited about ten days, noticing a strange odor every now and then. Today I came home from work and just about fell over from the smell of cat pee drifting all through the house. I don't have a cat. It's the flowers! How can something that looks so pretty smell so bad?

I will try transplanting it to a better pot with more drainage. Maybe that is causing the problem, but I think it is from the actual blossoms.

I also planted a nice, odor-free, amaryllis a few weeks ago. It's growing taller every day, but alas, no blooms yet.
